Based on taking driving lessons alone and not practising privately, the average cost of learning to drive is £1,250.
The DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) recommends that learners spend 22 hours practising privately, in a family car. Don’t forget that you will need to be insured on the car you’re practising in.
Parallel parking and reverse parking are the trickiest to do according to our young drivers.
We would advise you to get a recommendation for a driving instructor rather than going for the cheapest one. Finding an instructor that you feel comfortable with will vastly improve your learning experience and chances of passing your test.
The DVSA recommends 45 hours’ worth of driving lessons with an instructor; This would also be alongside the recommended 22 hours’ private practice.
Once you’ve applied, you’ll have to wait to get behind the wheel though; You can drive at the age of 17, although it’s 16 in certain circumstances related to Personal Independence Payment.
